Youth Activities

At the YMCA we help develop the whole child - in Spirit, Mind, and Body.

We offer an outstanding variety of programs designed to encourage children to grow to their full potential by exposing them to sports, arts and crafts, music, and much more. By learning about themselves and others, they learn vital life skills and avenues of expression that they might have otherwise overlooked.

From swimming to gymnastics, ballet to karate: the Tecumseh YMCA, offers something for every kid. Help your child reach their full potential by participating in some activities at Your Hometown Y. .

Gymnastics
The Tecumseh YMCA has gymnastics programs you'll flip for! We teach kids to tumble, run, jump and twist in our gymnastics programs. From age 2 years and up, kids learn movement skills, fine motor skills, tumbling skills and advanced gymnastics elements in our progressive-based classes. Our program is designed to provide a safe, nurturing environment for children and youth to develop gymnastics skills as well as the four YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Gymnasts who are ready to take their skills to the next level can get involved in competitive gymnastics where the whole person is developed and competition and winning are kept in healthy perspective.

Sports
A mainstay of YMCA offerings for young people, Y youth sports programs fill kids' discretionary hours with positive activities and caring adult attention. Coaches -- often volunteers, including many parents -- emphasize teamwork and cooperation over winning at any cost, developing good values over developing the next superstar.

Martial Arts
For people new to the martial arts, the benefits of martial arts training might not be obvious. Some will think, sure, it's a great workout--just look at that "Ty Bo" guy. And of course it's good for self-defense, with all that punching and kicking. But the benefits of martial arts training, especially for children and teenagers, are much more than physical improvements. Martial arts benefits span a spectrum of physical, mental, and social attributes, all of which are learned and improved through martial arts training. Physical benefits include physical fitness and personal security; Mental benefits include goal setting and discipline; Social benefits include camaraderie, self-esteem, and respect. Naturally, these benefits also apply to most adults as well. However, developing these attributes early in life contributes to a healthy, happy adulthood. That's why it's even more important to get those kids kicking.

Friendship
The Tecumseh YMCA builds lifetime friendships. Children have the opportunity to meet people they may never have encountered in their daily routines. Through the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility, boys and girls learn to work and play together.

Swim Lessons
Learning to swim at the YMCA is about more than just stroke development. It's about building confidence, self-esteem, and developing strong values in all of our participants. The YMCA believes in Discovery Learning; a child-centered approach, where kids learn through play, hands-on exercises and creative repetition. Children are taught in small groups with others of their own age and skill level. Not only do kids develop life-long skills that can help them stay healthy, but they also gain a sense of accomplishment that leaves them feeling good about what they've learned.

Dance
Dance is essential to general education for boys and girls. Dance education beginning in early childhood and continuing throughout life benefits the body, mind and spirit. The physical benefits of dance are increased flexibility, improved circulation, posture, balance and coordination. Intellectually dance enriches learning through a variety of perspectives. Dance also awakens consciousness of beauty and an understanding and appreciation for forms, choices and ritual from a broad cultural range. Dance helps children develop self-confidence and self-esteem while improving their sensitivity, understanding, appreciation and consideration for others.
